Feelin' beachy

I spent the morning doing some work and running some errands. Once the afternoon rolled around, I felt that itch for a new adventure. I wanted to go shoot some photos in some place I hadn’t been before.

But getting out of the city isn’t a possibility right now. Instead, I kept it local, and drove out to Mentor Headlands State Park for the first time in 15 years.

The last time I was here was when I was a summer camp counselor volunteering for the Arrupe Summer Program at St. Ignatius High School. Towards the end of the summer, we took a field trip to the beach. I made the mistake of swimming in the water, and struggled to fix my hair at the end of the day. #relaxedhairstruggles

Anyway, it was extremely windy. The waves were choppy, and my fro was out, so my hair was waving all over the place, making it hard to see. I should’ve brought a hair tie with me.

I wish I’d stayed longer, but I didn’t have much to eat today, and I knew I only had so long before I developed a hunger headache. Next time, I plan to come back armed with a picnic basket, a chair, and an umbrella.

Editing these photos was fun. I was going for a nostalgic, beachy vibe here–a bit similar to the nolstagic negative film simulation. For these edits, I boosted the oranges and blues and used the tone curve to add a fade effect. I liked these settings enough that I created my own preset called “Feelin’ Beachy.” If I’m ever shooting beach photos, I’ll try to use this one.

I used my 18-55mm zoom lens. Honestly, I think that I’ll use my zoom lens for any type of landscape or nature photography.

Anyway, today was a fun today, and I hope to be back at the beach as we (finally) start to get some warmer weather. I have some fun photography adventures planned for tomorrow: the St. Patty’s Day parade downtown, and a photowalk along the Cleveland Memorial Shoreway.
