The abandoned coast guard station
The last time I was at Wendy Park, it was cold, gray, and quiet.
When I went earlier this week, it was warm, sunny(ish), and there was chatter everywhere. I’m so glad summer is nearly upon us.
I had wanted to go somewhere different to shoot today. Although I know you can think of new challenges and projects to keep your photography fresh, I still find that I’m getting bored shooting in the same old places. I want to go somewhere new, to another city to take photos. What I’d really like to do is just go on a day trip so I can encounter new buildings, new sights, new people.
But for now, I’ll have to stick with revising old spots.

The coast guard station over at Wendy Park is long abandoned. There are faint lines indicating where the building’s name used to be. The coast guard works out of the building on E 9th street now.
Thankfully, they didn’t tear the old place down, and now it serves as a spot for visitors to take pictures and, as I learned, fish. There were lots of folks out with their fishing poles and buckets of bait. I’m not a fisher, but I’m considering going to Dick’s Sporting Goods to get a pole. Everyone seemed to be so relaxed there, sitting on the edge of the water with their poles in hand.
I tried to get some wide shots of the station, but it was hard because the sun was setting behind the building. So I settled instead for people watching and snapping some photos of the fishers and a giant barge that sailed on by. I had no idea how long those things are.
While there, I also attempted to use slow mo to record some videos. I recently discovered that you can do slow mo in camera with my XT-5. I could see that coming in hand at events or weddings. Not so much for trying to capture flying seagulls.
I stayed over at Wendy Park for about an hour and a half before dinner and a meeting beckoned me home. I’m glad I was able to go back and see everything lush and green and in bloom. But that doesn’t erase the fact that I still want to travel outside of Cleveland and do something new. I’m really hoping I can find a way to travel this summer. Nashville was on the docket at some point. Even going back to Chicago would be nice.
But I digress. Here are some photos I took of the barge, fishers, and the coast guard station.
